DC UNIVERSE INFINITE — the ultimate comic book fan experience

In 2020, we were asked to revamp DC Universe to what would eventually become DC Universe Infinite — the ultimate comic book fan experience. We tackled many aspects of design for this project - including brand & logo exploration, a complete UI reskin, and many big feature updates to cater towards our awesome fans.

What is DC Universe Infinite?

The big difference between the legacy DC Universe and this iteration(infinite) is that we're now only strictly focused on comics. No more streaming videos. DC Universe Infinite is a fan-first, premium digital comic subscription service featuring the largest collection of DC comics anywhere! Fans can dive in to over 25,000 comic books and graphic novels from DC, Vertigo, DC Black Label and Milestone Media with our newly enhanced digital comic reader.

Follow your favorite heroes like Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman and Aquaman through curated collections and key storylines like Flashpoint and Dark Nights: Metal. Save collections, favorites and custom lists in our new MyDC library and download issues for unlimited offline reading.

Initial DCUI Brand Exploration

During the very early stages of DC Universe Infinite, we had fun and reimagined what aspects of what this future iteration can be. I explored everything from new logos, brand imagery, key art, merchandise, animation, and more! After a lot of play, we finally settled with what we have today for DCUI.

A Brighter Future

Along with the new business model, we decided that it was time to revamp and give the service a fresh coat of paint. After a thorough audit across all platforms, we updated all of our UI across web, iOS and Android to give it the new light theme which utilizes whites, greys and blues instead of the dark theme. We also took the time to do some much needed housekeeping by updating fonts, cleaning up the navigation, removing unnecessary elements, fixing padding, etc. All in all, we tightened up the look and feel of the service, which now looks a lot closer to the overall DC brand and identity.

A Curation For All Comic Fans

The new DC Universe Infinite hompage is a curation meant to satisfy all comic fans new and old. I designed the newly revamped marquee which highlights the latest marketing initiatives, newly released comics, and news.

If you are new to DC comics, you have guidance towards modules like Get to Know characters, editorial collections and more. And finally, for veterans, you can dive directly into comic browsing to browse through our massive library of over 25,000 books with the help of a robust filtering system. DCUI was designed with comic fans in mind!

Listening to Users & Fans

Throughout the course of DC Universe Infinite, our broader team always tried to be cognizant of the needs of our fans. Through various initiatives like talking to the community and doing user testing, we made some key feature updates so that we could continue to improve the DC comic book experience. Below are some of our favorite features.

DCUI-ComicBrowse

Comic Browse

One of the most important features of a comic book experience is the comic browse feature. I iterated on our comic browsing page based on user research, and added changes to the filters and categories, the way comic series are displayed on page, as well as what it means to drill into a series to get to the individual issues. Comic browse is one of the most important features for DCUI.

Streamlining Save

Collecting and curating a library of comics is something that comic book collectors enjoy. I streamlined our Save feature by allowing our users to add any comic book to their library, anywhere. You can do this by simply hovering over a book. You can also add it directly to a custom list that you've created in order to quickly organize books into collections.

MyLibrary

My DC Library

After saving and collecting your favorite comic books, they will automatically be sorted into categories suc as storylines, series, and issues. If you want to get under the hood, you can organize them in the My DC library. Users can add/remove comics, create new custom lists, etc. Think of it as your personal physical treasure trove of comic books!

The Path Forward

Thanks for viewing! We hope to continue to iterate on DCU Infinite. Please visit again and stay tuned for future updates as we continue to serve DC fans all around the world.
